The Brief: Establishing Verizon’s 5G Leadership with Immersive Technology
Verizon, as a prominent technology powerhouse, spearheaded the advent of 5G mobile connectivity. To underscore the potential unlocked by 5G bandwidth, examples were required to showcase the extraordinary feats facilitated by this technology. With the impending holiday season and the launch of novel 5G-enabled devices, Verizon sought a captivating demonstration platform for their technological prowess.
Our Response: Pioneering the World’s First Verizon Augmented Reality Store
What better approach to compellingly convey the necessity of adopting new technology than to astonish and captivate consumers with its potential? Although today’s mobile access and speed seem ordinary, the landscape was vastly different before the advent of 5G. Loading web pages took up to a minute, and multitasking for resource-intensive web-based tasks was a distant dream. The introduction of 5G heralded a seismic boost in speed, paralleled by the arrival of devices capable of supporting previously unfeasible mobile experiences.
Collaborating closely with Verizon, Yahoo Creative Studio embarked on the 5G Holiday Market initiative. This entailed crafting an Augmented Reality portal that welcomed users into a Verizon-themed holiday store. Within this immersive realm, users explored products via interactive hotspots, recorded messages enhanced with AR filters, and even exchanged AR gifts.
Drawing from our proficiency in designing augmented reality experiences, we conceptualized a virtual Verizon store bedecked in festive holiday decor. Upon entering the AR portal, users found themselves within a winter wonderland rendition of a conventional store. Leveraging advanced 3D capabilities and interactive features, we artfully concealed key holiday items within presents, enticing users to engage. Upon interaction, these virtual packages unveiled consumer electronic devices rendered in stunning high-fidelity 3D.
Information regarding each item was accessible via hotspots, seamlessly linking users to online purchasing options. This innovative AR encounter demonstrated remarkable engagement, with an average time spent metric surpassing industry benchmarks by a staggering 272%. Through this immersive experience, Verizon triumphantly marked the onset of the 5G era.
In my role as the Director of Innovation, I assumed multifaceted responsibilities encompassing thought leadership, design ideation, creative concept development, vendor selection, assessment of feasibility and scope, and orchestration of omnichannel distribution.
