The Brief: Demonstrate the Potency of the IBM Cloud
As an official sponsor of the U.S. Open Tennis Championships, IBM’s role encompassed the recording and dissemination of comprehensive match data. Under this partnership, all aspects of play – players, points, aces, faults, double faults, match results, game points, and an array of additional data – were meticulously recorded and relayed in real-time to the IBM cloud. This dataset served as the foundation for various media outlets to extract information and furnish match reports.
Our Response: Can We Craft Music from Tennis Data?
In collaboration with Tool of North America and James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem, we embarked on an innovative endeavor: crafting distinct soundscapes in real-time, uniquely generated by each ongoing match. The ebb and flow of every match, combined with the individual rhythm of each player, directly influenced the auditory experience that unfolded.
The final product materialized as a live stream of electronic/techno music, accessible not only at the Sound Booths during the event but also via mobile devices or home streaming. The visual accompaniments were designed as shareable assets for social media platforms, each meticulously linked back to the specific match from which it was derived.
Upon the culmination of the U.S. Open, James Murphy delved into the extensive pool of over 400 hours of music, curating his preferred matches. These selections then underwent his artistic remixing process in the studio, culminating in an album of remastered tracks, subsequently released on SoundCloud.
This project truly embodied the fusion of artistry and technological innovation.
In my capacity as Executive Producer, I was tasked with ascertaining feasibility, budgeting, and scoping the project, selecting vendors, overseeing the digital development of applications, managing on-site event logistics, and ensuring the delivery of the final assets.
