The Brief: To engage new audiences and grow the game of tennis globally, the USTA needs the US Open to provide a rich viewer experience both on-site and on-line for millions of fans around the world.
For 26 years, the USTA has collaborated with IBM to provide a rich experience for fans, media, coaches and players alike. “Nowadays, you can’t just provide the scores,” remarks Nicole Jeter-West. “Spectators want deeper analysis and answers to their questions. How do players stack up against each other? What does each player need to do to increase their chances of winning against a particular opponent? To deliver answers to these burning questions, we rely on powerful analytics provided by IBM.” Data is at the heart of the US Open digital experience—both on-site and around the world. IBM captures, analyzes, and creates compelling, real-time fan experiences centered on US Open data, including scores and statistics, hot topics, and breaking news across all tournament digital platforms.
Our Response: Let’s showcase how Tennis Data in NYC can be fun and engaging.
Over the years we’ve become quite familiar with the terabytes of data generated by each U.S. Open. This year we partnered with Pet Gorilla and animation company Buck to create a tapestry of graphics showing why the U.S. Open played in Queens, NY is unlike any other tournament in the world. Creating real-time facts and graphics to accompany each match, we delivered scores and more in new and exciting ways to tennis fans.
We created a responsive website that was updated in real-time with graphics created using match data. This content was interspersed with fun facts about NYC, players and the history of the tournament. All content was downloadable and shareable on social media.
My role as Executive Producer on this project was to determine feasibility and scope, vendor selection and management, web development, pre-pro, production and delivery of real-time content.
